Apple launched its latest M4 MacBook Air this week, and as expected, the performance of the machine is far superior to its predecessor. We are anxiously waiting for the devices to hit the shelves so real-world tests can be conducted, but before that, benchmarks associated with the new M4 chip have been surfacing online, which appear to showcase the potential of the device. The M4 MacBook Air Metal scores have surfaced online, highlighting performance on par with the 10-core M4 MacBook Pro.
M4 MacBook Air Metal benchmarks reveal a minute performance gap with the M4 MacBook Pro
The new M4 MacBook Air is quite an upgrade in terms of performance, as Apple has equipped the device with the same chip that powers the MacBook Pro. While the performance can be the same on paper, the real-world experience could be a lot different, as the ‘Air’ does not have a proper thermal solution to prevent CPU throttling.
For those not familiar, the Geekbench Metal test measures the performance of the chip’s GPU performance using Apple’s Metal API. It is designed to draw results on how well a GPU can handle tasks like image processing, machine learning, and other compute-intensive operations that benefit from GPU acceleration. The test shows that the M4 chip in the MacBook Air is pretty close to the performance of the M4 MacBook Pro, which scored 57,788 on the same Metal test.
According to findings, the M4 MacBook Air scored a whopping 54,846 in Geekbench 6 Metal benchmarks, revealing that its performance will be pretty comparable to that of the 10-core M4 MacBook Pro, which also features more or less the same core count. However, as we mentioned earlier, real-world performance could be very different since the ‘Air’ does not have a fan to keep the device cool during extended workloads and gaming.
The M4 MacBook Air is a major upgrade, despite having the same design as its predecessor just because of its performance. Apple has not introduced Wi-Fi 7 with the latest releases as well. However, the company has introduced a new Sky Blue color with the latest machines, which will give the device a fresh look over the previous version of the machine.
We also have to take note that the MacBook Pro-like performance is now available on the MacBook Air, which costs just $999 for the base model. Additionally, it also features 16GB of base memory, which makes it a pretty good deal overall.
