Marin authorities arrest suspect in internet scam

Marin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a San Francisco man who allegedly defrauded residents in San Rafael and Point Reyes Station of at least $64,000.

The scam involved notifying the victims that their Adobe Acrobat or Apple ID accounts were compromised, then instructing them to withdraw cash from their bank accounts and give the money to couriers for financial protection, said sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Schermerhorn.

Investigators linked a vehicle to both cases through license plate scanners installed on roads in the county, Schermerhorn said. Authorities detained the suspect Tuesday after finding the vehicle in South San Francisco.

Zhuowen Yu, 43, was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, elder theft and conspiracy. He is being held without a bail amount.

Investigators are attempting to identify more suspects.
